Day 1: Southern check-in

Your adventure starts at the southern end of the route. From Kristiansand it's a 1,5 hour drive to Flekkefjord - the starting point of Norwegian Scenic Route Jæren. Follow the route some 30 or 60 km to reach your first stop - one of our captivating Historic hotels in the region.

Grand Hotell Egersund

A venerable hotel dating from 1895, Grand Hotell Egersund provides a warm welcome in the heart of Egersund. Through different eras and in changing times, Grand Hotell has grown and flourished. Today, the hotel serves as a primer in different architectural philosophies and styles, with everything from dragon and Swiss-chalet elements of the late 19th century via 1930s functionalism to more recent modifications.

Grand Hotell comprises 10 attractive buildings in the centre of Egersund. The town centre boasts many fine wooden buildings, most of them protected by law. The original property tells the story of herring fishing, the hotel business, and good and bad times going back more than 100 years.

Sogndalstrand Kulturhotell

Sogndalstrand with its charming buildings and cultural landscape is protected by law by The Directorate for Cultural Heritage. The Director General for cultural Heritage has called the town the finest cultural gem on the west coast.

Today Sogndalstrand, in all its glory, has become a popular destination. The county governor in Rogaland has been in charge of an extensive lime treatment project in Sokndalvassdraget in the recent years. The result of this is that the river Sokna is once again rich with salmon. There are also wild sheep in the Strannaåsen territory.

Enthusiasts Eli Laupstad Omdal and Jan Oddvar Omdal started with Krambukafé – the general store café – in June 1994, as a voluntary endeavour to bring this unique location from the age of sailing into focus; an entire small town was in decline, and something had to be done.

Today Sogndalstrand Kulturhotell comprises eight different houses with 15 guest rooms, a restaurant, café, conference room, prison pub, etc. The oldest house dates from 1831. The presence of the hotel has also given several players the courage to invest in the local community.

Day 2: The road goes on

After a hearty breakfast you are ready to ride north along the coast. This is a road that differs to some extent from many other scenic routes, it’s quite simply a regular all-purpose road. To get the strongest impressions, you should probably stop the car, or perhaps take the time to drive along some of the little side roads. The coastal landscape is unique and completely unlike anything you will find in other parts of Norway.

Take the time to drive on some of the small side roads. The idyllic Sogndalsstranda is a great experience. Detours down to pebbles and sand dunes provide exciting experiences of the sea and light, lighthouses and cultural heritage. At Jæren you will find Norway’s longest sandy beaches, an entire 70 km of sand dunes with their own flora and fauna. These flat beaches are perfect for hiking, and the entire coastline can be explored on foot.

Many shipwrecks have occurred along the Jæren coast and the unique coastline necessitated the development of special rescue techniques. Kvassheim lighthouse was equipped with a foghorn when it was built, in order to guide shipping traffic safely past the coast of Jæren. The lighthouse is splendidly situated against the background of the open sea. Today the lighthouse is open to anyone who wants to take a break and learn something new.

GamleVærket
