Our package starts in Lofthus and if you come from the east, you can also experience the Hardangervidda Scenic Route. Be sure to stop after Hardangervidda at the famous Vøringsfossen - with a drop of 182 metres, and the spectacular new step bridge over the gorge. See driving route from Voss here.

The roads in Hardanger have their own speed, and you have to adapt to the natural pace. Here the road lies on shelves in steep valley sides, or literally goes through the apple orchards, and it is perhaps this closeness that makes this route special. When you approach Lofthus and Hotel Ullensvang, you also get a fantastic view of the Hardanger Bridge - one of the world's longest suspension bridges and the longest in Norway.

Day 1: Magical Hardanger

This short holiday starts at one of our historic hotels in Sørfjorden, one of the innermost branches of the main Hardangerfjorden. If you drive from the south you may already have started the National Scenic Route from Låtefossen, just south of Odda. Sørfjorden offers spectacular scenery, fjord breeze and culinary delights.

Utne Hotel - one of Norway's oldest hotels

Discover the enchanting allure of Utne Hotel, a living testament to time itself, boasting almost three centuries of continuous operation since 1722. Nestled intimately along the picturesque Hardangerfjord, this historic gem offers more than just accommodation—it presents an authentic journey into the past. Stepping into Utne Hotel is akin to entering a cherished grandmother's house, where the ambiance is rich with the nostalgia of fluffy lace curtains, creaking floors, and snug beds.

Each of the 17 uniquely adorned rooms at Utne Hotel tells a story, featuring historical features, furniture, and styles that transport you to a bygone era. This is not merely a place to stay; it's a haven for indulging in life's pleasures—good food, good wine, and good company. Your stay at Utne Hotel is a respite from the ordinary, a chance to catch your breath in the midst of everyday life. As the day gently unfolds, savor a delectable 5-course dinner, a culinary experience that transcends mere sustenance, served with warmth and care from 8 pm.

Awaken to a hearty breakfast, bidding farewell to the comforting embrace of Utne Hotel. This unique haven along the Hardanger Scenic Route beckons those seeking more than just accommodation—it invites you to partake in an authentic, immersive experience where the echoes of centuries past meet the comforts of today.

Day 2: Experiencing the route

The next day you continue along the captivating Hardanger Scenic Route, tracing the fjord's meandering course. If you came from the east, we can recommend you make your way down to Låtefossen in order to experience the full route. After a serene ferry ride from Kinsarvik, you'll reach the historic village of Utne, home of historic Utne Hotel, a living testament to the region's rich history. Nestled alongside the Hardangerfjord, Utne exudes an intimate and authentic atmosphere, reminiscent of a bygone era with its quaint streets and charming architecture.

Following a delightful exploration of Utne, your scenic adventure continues along the Scenic Route to Jondal, with a recommended stop at the Hereiane rest area, offering breathtaking views from Hardangerfjorden's shore to the mountainous heights over 400 meters above sea level. A ferry ride from Jondal to Tørvikbygd opens up diverse routes, allowing you to choose between the scenic paths leading to Norheimsund and Bergen or Kvanndal and Granvin. Throughout this journey, encounter picturesque rest areas like Steinstøberget, providing idyllic views of the Hardangerfjord and Folgefonna. As you conclude the route, the road gracefully guides you to the charming village of Ulvik and the renowned Brakanes Hotel, offering a serene retreat amid the natural wonders that have attracted travelers for over 150 years.
