Day 1: Let the adventure begin

The road trip starts by the beautiful Sognefjord. Here you check in at one of our Historic hotels.

Kviknes Hotel

The Kvikne family has been hosting since the hotel was built in Swiss style in 1877, and despite both renovations and expansions, the hotel by the fjord has managed to retain its unique character. Kviknes Hotel is today a modern hotel with soul and atmosphere, and both works of art and treasures collected over generations help to give the hotel its special style.

In Balestrand you can visit the Norwegian Museum of Tourism, which opened in 2016, and walk over to Ciderhuset, where in the summer you can join a cider tasting and shop in the farm shop. Ciderhuset has its own shop with approx. 20 different types of Balholm cider and fruit juice.

Balestrand also has a good, varied and well-marked hiking trail network where most people will find a suitable alternative. Some of the trails are information trails where you can read about the nature and the animals that live in the area. The trails are also well organized with viewpoints, benches and campfire sites. Many are accessible from the center of Balestrand.

And after the trip? Then rest in quiet surroundings on the terrace or in one of the hotel's lounges. In the evening, enjoy a good dinner in the magnificent dining room. You will surely also find something good in the glass, as the hotel's wine list is the most richest and largest in Sognefjorden.

Flatheim

Nestled within the scenic mountain and fjord landscape of western Norway, Flatheim is a charming farm hotel situated strategically along the National Scenic Route over Gaularfjellet in Vestland. Surrounded by nature, mountains, rivers, light, and sounds, it offers a unique opportunity to unwind in historical and distinctive rooms.

Resting in carefully restored log houses on the farm, each room exudes its own character, decorated with meticulous thought and love. One of these protected houses even dates back to the 16th century, featuring a preserved living room. The farm is enveloped by a delightful garden adorned with flowers and useful plants, providing several outdoor and covered spots to relax and appreciate the surroundings. Flatheim aslo has a wooden fired hot tub and sauna that can be rented by advance booking.

The proximity to the protected Gaular watercourse, meandering nearby, offers valuable opportunities for activities such as swimming, fishing, and hiking along lakes, waterfalls, and crystal-clear rivers. The 22 km-long Fossestien trail opens up possibilities for walks suitable for all. For those seeking a unique lodging experience with primitive luxury and an even closer connection to nature, Glamping tents are available by the riverbank.

Day 2: Norwegian Scenic Route Gaularfjellet

After a good breakfast and maybe some experiences you start the drive towards Gaularfjellet.

The tour goes along the fjord before the road winds its way up to the highest point on the mountain. At the picnic area at Utsikten you can enjoy the sight of a lush and beautiful landscape where Highway 613 winds its way up the hillside. The road follows the Gaular watercourse, which is one of the few protected watercourses in Norway, and offers everything from wild rapids and waterfalls to quiet sections where the water flows quietly. A trip over the resilient bridge over Likholefossen waterfall gives you the experience of being in the middle of the exuberant waterfall. The drive takes just over 4 hours.

The tour ends in either Stryn or Øye, each located in spectacular surroundings by their respective fjords, and each home to a Historic hotel.

Union Øye

Welcome to Union Øye, a journey back in time. The hotel has for generations been an attractive destination for royalty, writers and lovers. Ever since its opening in 1891, the hotel has been a place where guests come to enjoy the silence, tranquility and good life in magnificent surroundings.

The hotel's 30 rooms are all individually decorated and furnished with carefully selected antiques. The rooms are also named after famous people who have stayed at the hotel throughout the ages; Kaiser Wilhelm II, King Oscar II, Queen Maud and King Haakon, as well as the authors Karen Blixen, Knut Hamsun, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and not least the composer Edvard Grieg. Every day, visitors are given the opportunity to look into the hotel's available rooms.

Take a stroll in the hallways and get lost in the stately fjord castle before being served a good 3-course menu in the hotel dining room. Dinner is served at 18:30 and 20:30. Choose the time that suites you best.

Sunnmøre is one of the world's most attractive destinations for those seeking nature-based experiences. At Hotel Union Øye you have the Sunnmøre Alps and Hjørundfjord right on your doorstep - an area known for being Norway's best among top tour enthusiasts. The hotel is beautifully located at the end of the fjord and beautiful Norangsdalen and offers kayaks and bicycles to its guests. See the hotel's activities here.

Visnes Hotel, Stryn

Welcome to Visnes Hotel, a charming hotel in Stryn with history dating all the way back to 1850. A stay at Visnes Hotel will present many impressions from the Norwegian fjords, with its unique nature and its characteristic culture.

The hotel was originally one of the biggest farms in the area, when the owner Anton Visnes decided to furnish some rooms and to receive guests in the main house. From then, the farm slowly developed into a hotel. Visnes Hotel now offers 15 rooms, where every single one of them are decorated in different styles, inspired from the interwar years. The breakfast will be served in the historic dining room, where your hosts will welcome you with freshly baked bread and willingly share tips and recommendations about your plans for the day.

The restaurant and the porch outside is a natural place to gather in the night. Here, the chefs mainly serve Norwegian and traditional food every night in the summer season. From the hotel you can easily take a stroll to the town centre of Stryn, or a walk along the river. Stryn is perfectly located in the middle of every big tourist attraction in the West Coast of Norway and Visnes Hotel is a perfect location for excursions and daytrips in the area.
