Day 1: The adventure starts in Røros

Enchanting Røros is a small town with a vibrant culture and compelling history. The town was once the site of a bustling copper works, and an interesting museum and mine tour recount the developments over time. You can walk or in wintertime sled – through the streets and admire the rare concentration of centuries-old wooden houses and buildings.

The region’s mountain farms yield excellent produce and Røros has become a well regarded center for locally produced food in Norway. Each meal or snack is an opportunity to sample truly local food. The exclusive meats and award-winning cheeses are particularly remarkable.

Wander the town’s colorful streets. In wintertime, borrow a free kicksled from the hotel, called a “spark”, to try out a popular local form of transport. The iconic church is considered one of the country’s most important religious buildings, with few changes since its construction in the 18th century, and its tower can be seen throughout town.

Upon arriving in Røros, one of our historic hotels extends a warm welcome to the mining town. The kitchen is a source of pride for Vertshuset Røros. The head chef and his team use local quality ingredients and conjure up gourmet meals with clear inspiration from Røros' food traditions and culinary culture. In the evening, you will be served a delightful 4-course dinner.

The hotels located in Røros are:

Røros Hotell

At Røros Hotell you can put on your skis or hiking shoes right outside the front door. Or you can keep your slippers on, and visit the hotel's gorgeous bath and spa facilities.  Enjoy the view of the famous wooden houses and the famous Bergstaden Ziir from the hotel's 38-degree hot outdoor pool.

When you return rosy-cheeked from an active day in the mountain mining town of Røros, you can enjoy the comforts of Røros Hotell, whether you prefer a quiet evening in your room or an exquisite meal based on high-quality local ingredients.

Vertshuset Røros

Vertshuset Røros is situated in Rammgården at the heart of the Røros World Heritage site.

Rammgården has a long and dramatic history, stretching back to the 17th century. The main building was taken into use as a restaurant and bar in 1967. Over the last few years it has been renovated in traditional Røros style, in consultation with the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage.

The back building has 32 cosy rooms and six apartments, all to hotel standard. The kitchen is the hotel's pride and joy, using quality local ingredients to produce gourmet meals that fuse innovation and tradition.

Dining at Vertshuset is a treat for all the senses – welcome to a cultural experience!

Day 2: From town to city

Before departure the next day, be sure to sample more local meats and cheeses with homemade bread at the abundant breakfast buffet. Then, take some time to delve into the intriguing local history before the 2.5 hour drive to Trondheim. Røros was once an important center for copper mining and the industry has left a significant mark on the area. Today, the town and parts of the surrounding landscape are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kaffestuggu is Røros’ oldest café and once again, local products like reindeer punctuate the menu. For a tasty souvenir, the supermarkets stock many regional specialties including flatbread, dairy products, and sausages. See more activities in Røros here.

The drive from Røros to Bårdshaug Herregård takes about 2,5 hours and passes through a unique scenic landscape. See the driving route here (Google Maps).

The travel from Røros to Trondheim is easiest done by train, where you can sit back and relax as you enjoy the majestic landscape for just about 2,5 hours. For times and tickets, see entur.no. You can also travel by car, which takes about the same time. See the route here

Upon arrival in Orkland, you check in to your hotel and prepare for dinner and drinks in the evening.

Originally a parsonage, Bårdshaug Herregård (Bårdshaug Manor) was purchased by architect, consul, and businessman Christian Thams in the 1890s. Known as a founding member of designing and exporting log buildings, Thams translated his work into rebuilding and renovating Bårdshaug Herregård to become a distinctive manor home. He was responsible for designing homes for many cultural luminaries including Brigitte Bardot, King Leopold of Belgium, and Eiffel tower designer Gustav Eiffel.

Leave modern life behind for a day and stay the night in the historical manor from the beginning of last century. Feel the atmosphere from a time long gone when you enter what was once the family home of Orkdalens most prominent family.

Day 3: One last slice of Trondheim

Take a calm morning, sleep a little extra, and enjoy the last breakfast of the trip to the fullest. Did you know that at De Historiske, there are specific quality criteria for breakfast? Here, you can expect local flavors, organic products, and, not least, signature dishes. Enjoy the morning, and feel free to stay a few extra days! There's plenty to do in Orkland and Trondheim. Check out some suggestions here.

PS: If you wish to travel from Oslo this route is also easily accessible by train. Several trains run daily from Oslo to Røros, with a change in Hamar. The total journey takes about five hours.  Check departure times and buy tickets here.
