Day 1: The adventure starts at Bårdshaug

Set in the green Orkdal valley just southwest of Trondheim, Orkanger is a welcoming little town where the fjord meets gentle farmland. It is the perfect place to slow down and settle into the rhythm of Trøndelag before the journey continues into the mountains.

The surrounding region has long been known for its rich produce—from fresh seafood along the fjord to meat, dairy, and grains from the inland farms. Here, every meal becomes an introduction to the flavours that define this part of Norway, and a fitting first taste of the culinary route ahead.

Originally a parsonage, Bårdshaug Herregård (Bårdshaug Manor) was purchased by architect, consul, and businessman Christian Thams in the 1890s. Known as a founding member of designing and exporting log buildings, Thams translated his work into rebuilding and renovating Bårdshaug Herregård to become a distinctive manor home. He was responsible for designing homes for many cultural luminaries including Brigitte Bardot, King Leopold of Belgium, and Eiffel tower designer Gustav Eiffel.

Leave modern life behind for a day and stay the night in the historical manor from the beginning of last century. Feel the atmosphere from a time long gone when you enter what was once the family home of Orkdalens most prominent family.

Upon arriving in Orkland, you will check in at Bårdshaug Herregård, where a warm welcome awaits.

The kitchen is the pride of Bårdshaug, where quality local ingredients are transformed into gourmet meals that combine tradition with innovation. In the evening, you will be served a delightful dinner in the manor’s historic surroundings—dining here is a treat for all the senses, and a memorable start to your culinary journey.

Bårdshaug Herregård Stay the night in a distinctive manor home steeped in history, where elegant interiors and a tranquil setting invite you to leave the everyday behind. Relax in the atmospheric library, settle into the lounge, or simply enjoy the calm of the manor and its grounds.

When the evening draws in, you can savour the comforts of Bårdshaug Herregård—whether you prefer a quiet night in your room or a slow moment in one of the historic salons.

Day 2: From manor to mountain town

Start your day with the abundant breakfast, featuring local meats, cheeses, and homemade bread. Take some time to explore a little more of Orkland before your journey continues—the area offers easy walks by the fjord and through the historic surroundings of the manor. See more about the region here.

The drive from Bårdshaug Herregård to Røros takes about 2,5 hours and passes through a unique scenic landscape. See the driving route here (Google Maps).

Røros is a small town with a vibrant culture and fascinating history. Once home to a bustling copper works, the town’s past comes to life at the local museum and on guided mine tours. Stroll through the charming streets—or in winter, glide along on a traditional kicksled, known locally as a spark—and admire the rare concentration of centuries-old wooden houses.

The surrounding mountain farms provide outstanding produce, making Røros one of Norway’s leading centers for locally sourced food. Every meal is an opportunity to taste something truly regional, from exclusive meats to award-winning cheeses.

Don’t miss the town’s iconic 18th-century church, one of Norway’s most significant religious landmarks. With its original character largely intact and its tower visible across the town, it remains a striking symbol of Røros.

Upon arriving in Røros, you will check in at Røros Hotell, where a warm welcome awaits.

The kitchen at Vertshuset Røros is a true source of pride. Here, the head chef and his team create gourmet meals using the finest local ingredients, with clear inspiration from Røros’ food traditions and culinary culture. In the evening, you will be served a delightful 4-course dinner.

Røros Hotell

At Røros Hotell you can put on your skis or hiking shoes right outside the front door. Or you can simply relax and enjoy the hotel’s swimming pool and sauna.

When you return rosy-cheeked from an active day in the mountain town of Røros, you can enjoy the comforts of Røros Hotell—whether you prefer a quiet evening in your room or to relax in the cozy lobby bar.

Vertshuset Røros

Vertshuset Røros is located in historic Rammgården, right in the heart of the Røros World Heritage site. With roots dating back to the 17th century, the building has a long and dramatic history. Since 1967 it has housed a restaurant and bar, and in recent years it has been carefully restored in traditional Røros style in collaboration with the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage.

The kitchen is the pride of Vertshuset, where quality local ingredients are transformed into gourmet meals that combine tradition with innovation. Dining here is a treat for all the senses – welcome to a cultural experience!

Day 3: One last slice of Trøndelag

Take a calm morning, sleep a little extra, and enjoy the last breakfast of the trip to the fullest. Did you know that at De Historiske, there are specific quality criteria for breakfast? Here, you can expect local flavors, organic products, and, not least, signature dishes.

Before you set off, take some time to explore more of Røros’ fascinating history. Once a thriving copper mining hub, the town and its surrounding landscape are today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stop by Kaffestuggu, Røros’ oldest café, to enjoy local specialties such as reindeer dishes. For a delicious souvenir, local supermarkets offer regional products like flatbread, dairy, and sausages. See more activities in Røros here.

Enjoy the morning, and feel free to stay a few extra days—there is plenty to discover both in Røros and back along the route in Orkland and Trondheim.

PS: This route also works well by train. Trondheim is the natural arrival point for the start of the journey, with onward connections toward Orkanger. From Røros, several trains run daily back toward Oslo, with a change in Hamar, and the total journey takes about five hours. Check departure times and buy tickets here.
