The Telemark Canal was carved into the rock over 100 years ago. When the canal was completed in 1892, it was called the "eighth wonder". The canal connects the coast of Telemark with the interior through eight locks at a distance of 105 km from Skien to Dalen. An adventurous waterway with narrow rivers, large lakes and ancient cultural history.

Day 1: The only way is up

This short trip starts with a beautiful journey on the Telemark Canal from Lunde to Dalen Hotel. There are separate parking spaces at Lunde where you can park your car before boarding the boat. Departure from Lunde is at 13.00.

Enjoy a 2-course lunch on board, including a glass of wine or mineral water. Sit back, relax and take in the spectacular view!

From the pier to the hotel there is an approximately 10 minute walk. Check in at Dalen Hotel, popularly known as the “fairytale hotel”. The unique hotel dates from 1894 and is built in a lavish romantic style with dragon heads, towers and spires, balconies, elaborate projections and cornices. Find a comfortable seat and soak up the atmosphere of the central hall – the heart of the hotel – with its magnificent stained-glass painting towering ten metres above you. Large areas of parkland open up looking eastwards towards the Bandak inland fjord. The mountainsides rise perpendicular to the north, south and west.

Step back in time and enjoy the hotel’s old-style luxury, paired with high-quality beds and gourmet meals. The hotel's ambitions are to deliver dining experiences out of the ordinary. With Michelin-star Executive Chef Mikael Öster and his highly decorated team, the restaurant experience is in focus during a visit to Dalen Hotel. In line with the hotel's history and founding, the menu is French inspired with the use of local and Norwegian ingredients. In the evening you will be served a refreshing aperitif and storytelling before enjoying a 3-course dinner in the restaurant. The restaurant is inspired by Telemark as a region with exciting ingredients and traditional recipes.

Day 2: Tranquility and elegance

The next day after breakfast we suggest a visit to the West Telemark museum and Rui. This trip is taken on your own. Ticket and guide are not included. You can walk or take the bus.

Back at the hotel, we recommend treating yourself to an "Afternoon tea" with sandwiches and homemade scones in the hotel's beautiful garden. This is not included in the package and can be booked separately at the hotel. In the evening, another 4-course dinner is served in the hotel restaurant. After dinner, coffee is served in front of the fireplace accompanied with classic tones from the hotel's pianist.

Day 3: Let the channel guide you home

Breakfast on your departure day is served onboard the canal cruise. Departure from Dalen is at 08.50 or 08.50 depending on the day of departure. Nothing beats enjoying your breakfast while you see the life around Telemarkskanalen come to life. Collect your car at Lunde, and head off to new adventures!
