Rorbu - the Norwegian fisherman's cabin

A Rorbu is a traditional cabin where fishermen live while fishing along the Norwegian coast. These cozy dwellings typically consisted of two rooms: a storage area for food and fishing equipment, and a living room with beds. With their distinctive bright red paint and white trim, Rorbuer are a symbol of Norway’s maritime heritage. They blend the ambiance of original fishermen’s dwellings with modern comfort, making them a unique and charming accommodation option for travelers visiting this picturesque region.

You'll check into your first rorbu on the little island of Støtt, located just over 1 hour by boat outside of Bodø. If you travel from south we advise you to follow the Scenic Route Helgelandskysten, the longest Scenic Route in Norway. You can choose to park your car in either Ørnes or  Bodø and take the passenger boats directly to the hotel. The island of Støtt is unavailable for traffic, making it possible for a unique wildlife to thrive. Tickets and routes for the boats can be found here.

You can also fly into Bodø from many destinations and hop on the passenger boat to Støtt.

STØTT – Top of Helgeland

The island of Støtt is situated right by the shipping lane in the far north of Helgeland. Our idyllic archipelago enjoys a panorama that spans from the jagged peaks of the Lofoten Islands in the north to the legendary and majestic Helgeland mountains of in the south.

In 1897, Johan Sørensen bought Støtt and operated a trading post here, buying the catch from local fishermen, produced cod liver oil and ran the busy country store. Today, the 4th and 5th generation of proprietors are continuing to enhance and develop the Støtt Old Trading Post, which has been carefully restored and upgraded with modern amenities.

In Restaurant Gammelbutikken you can dine in surroundings that are testimony to an ancient and thriving coastal culture. The chef proudly prepares dishes from the freshest catch and finest locally-sourced ingredients, served with wine carefully selected and paired with the dishes.

Støtt is known for offering hospitality with a personal touch, adventures in beautiful surroundings, accommodation in individually furnished rooms, and great dining based on the freshest seafood and best locally-sourced ingredients. Ever since people first settled on the island of Støtt, their livelihood has been based on respect for their natural surroundings. Harmony and sustainability are still the core values that are reflected in all key decisions here.

Through sun and storm - the rorbu provides a safe haven

The rorbu played an important role back when the fishing boats could not house accommodations for the fishers. The fishers would therefore go out at sea during the day, and return to the rorbu in the evening to get ready for the next trip. Due to this function, the rorbu was always located on, or near, the waters, making it easy to transport both equipment and people directly inside from the boat.

The travel from Støtt to Svinøya takes you trough a unique and spectacular landscape.

You can reach Svinøya Rorbuer from Bodø either by following E6, or start the journey by taking the ferry over til Moksnes and drive along the Scenic Route Lofoten up to Svinøya Rorbuer. Both routes take about 6 hours in total. You’ll find more information about the ferry here.

Svinøya Rorbuer

Once you reach Svinøya in Svolvær you’ll find yourself in the middle of a living fishing village between fish reception, piers, fishing shelters and old and new local buildings.

Svinøya's renowned restaurant, Børsen Spiseri in Handelsbrygga from 1828 gives you a good local dining experiences. Here you can enjoy a delicious breakfast with local ingredients.

On Svinøya in Svolvær you have the open sea on one side and dramatic Lofoten mountains on the other. A small Lofoten in miniature in the town of Svolvær, with a short way to both plane, boat and bus.

In collaboration with local activity providers, the hotel can deliver world-class experiences and activities and memories for life. If you haven't seen the northern lights dance on a black night sky before, we reccommend a visit. The Northern Lights can often be seen from the 20th of August to mid-April.

The history of the island dates back 200 years, and Svinøya Rorbuer has received the Norwegian Cultural Heritage's quality label "Olavsrosa", for its efforts to safeguard and disseminate the important coastal cultural history of Lofoten.
