A must-see when traveling in the footsteps of Edvard Grieg is Troldhaugen. The Villa was built in 1885, and the couple lived there the last 22 summers of Edvard Grieg’s life. Troldhaugen became a museum in 1928 and includes Grieg’s Villa, the composer’s hut and the Grieg couple’s gravesite as well as a modern museum building and the concert hall Troldsalen, a chamber music hall seating 200 people. The place is today filled with interesting memories of Grieg and has since its opening been a place of pilgrimage for Grieg lovers from all over the world.

Please note: The entrance ticket in Troldhaugen is NOT included in the package, and you can buy an entrance ticket here. We also recommend a lunch concert in Norway's most beautiful chamber music hall, Troldsalen. Tickets for the lunch concert are not included in the package. See concert calendar and book tickets for lunch concert in advance here.

After a pleasant visit to Troldhaugen, the journey continues to Lofthus in Hardanger and to Hotel Ullensvang - where Edvard Grieg spent a lot of time and got a lot of inspiration. See route from Bergen to Hardanger here. Travel time is approx. 2 hours.

In 1877, the world-famous composer came to Lofthus for the first time. Edvard Grieg had just lost both of his parents and his baby daughter. He was broken down and had to leave town. The famous composer received invitations from several places across Europe - but he chose Ullensvang in Hardanger. Several of his greatest works are inspired by the Hardanger nature, including Grieg's String Quartet in G Minor, Opus 27, The Mountain Thrall, Album for Male Voices, Opus 30 and sections of “Peer Gynt”. Edvard Grieg’s original composer's cabin still remains and can be found in Hotel Ullensvang's gardens.

Hotel Ullensvang’s history dates back to 1846. Today, the hotel has an impressive range of facilities, including the wonderful Ullensvang Bath with swimming pools indoors and outdoors, tennis court and restaurant serving dishes based on wonderful local produce. Enjoy the facilities and historic surroundings and end the day with a dinner (served between 19:00 – 21:00). After a good night’s sleep, start your day with a refreshing morning swim in the swimming pool (or maybe in the fjord?) before breakfast.
